Berry picking has changed a lot from years past. Last year, we went blueberry picking with Little Man for the first time. He was only about a month old. Let's be honest- I didn't do much. My husband totally picked up the slack, and thankfully we had a lot of blueberries left over from the year before.
But this year, I had a goal. I was going to try out the new juicer/steamer that my Grandma gave me for Christmas and make juice. I figured I'd need a lot for little man, and my husband likes it too. And... it is so expensive; if you buy the pure juice like we do.
Thankfully, my Dad came with me. My parents eat blueberries too, but not the extent that we do. When I first discovered how easy it was to pick blueberries at this place I went a little crazy. I'm talking 140 lbs. crazy. But my husband was working out of town a lot, and quite frankly those blueberries could very easily have been a dinner plan for me at that time.
At first, I just thought I'd get blueberries picked a lot faster with my Dad. He'd pick for himself (not many) plus stay to help me. But soon, I realized there was no way that I could have done it without another person. While Little Man was riding in the Ergo and leaning out to try to pick his own ripe berries/green berries/leaves, my dad was taking full buckets back to the truck. How would I have done that with all the gear I'd hauled out to the field?
About an hour in Little Man fell asleep and slept in his car seat for about an hour. We got a lot of picking done then. What am I going to do when he's not in this car seat anymore? Ugh!
Anyway, Dad hauled all the berries back to the truck, and I gathered up Little Man's gear. I think I may go a little more crazy with the gear than most. We had a lot of stuff in the field. The poor people on the other row could barely get through.
So this year I was a little more conservative. I got about 90 lbs. and my dad got about 10. But I can always go back :) Maybe.
